As you may or may not know, I recently returned home from a trip to Disney World. If you've ever been lucky enough to go to Disney World you know there's a special kind of magic that is only found there. Magic that makes you feel like a kid again.

At almost 31 years old, I am a child of the 80's. And as a good deal of my body paint projects would suggest, I am still a fan of all things 80's. In my opinion there was no better time to be a child. Safety had yet to be invented, toy companies created entire TV series to sell you their new product, and Hollywood suffered from an excess of... everything. It seemed like if you had an idea, not matter how ridiculous or over-the-top, there was someone out there willing to produce it. What a decade!

Captain EO is a perfect example of the ridiculousness of the 1980's. It's like traveling back in time to 1986 and getting a glimpse of another magical world - one fueled by cocaine and excess. I don't know who initially thought of the idea, but I do know that George Lucas, Francis Ford Coppola, and Michael Jackson thought it was a good idea. I, for one, whole-heartedly agree.

If you've never been luck enough to see Captain EO you are in for a treat! Come along with me while I take you on the journey of a lifetime. Make yourself comfortable - this is about to get bodacious.

Captain EO opens with a killer voice over about a "universe of good and evil" where a "rag tag band" struggles to bring freedom to a galaxy of despair. (Somehow this is not Star Wars.) As the camera pans we got a fantastic shot of what can only be described as the offspring of Jabba's Sail Barge and a fish.

My parents should never have met.

Cut to the interior where we get to meet the crew, populated by rejected character designs from The Labyrinth and a Max Rebo wannabe named "Hooter."

Hooter is clearly the mentally challenged "quota"hire, since he messes everything up at every possibly chance he can get. After Captain EO appears, he and his crew have a brief discussion on whether to go into battle or clean Hooter's bunk. Captain EO gives a stirring speech about how they are not "screw ups" and this time they'll prove command wrong. To battle it is!

At this moment a knock-off Klingon Bird of War arrives and the crew must get to their stations to engage in some sweet evasive maneuvers. During the battle it's made clear that Hooter ate their map and therefore they cannot locate the beacon they are trying to find. (It's interesting to note that in a space faring society, they still apparently use paper maps for navigation.) They have no choice but to evade the pursuing ship in the Death Star trench.

During this daring trench run, Commander Caterpillar-Brow shows up to insult the crew a little bit via hologram. This causes them to crash (I guess) and, lucky for them, they land right on the homing beacon. Commander Caterpillar-Brow then spells out their mission: they must find the Supreme Leader, and give her the gift. The only problem? They don't have the map!

After strolling around the Planet Junk they are captured by trash aliens and taken to the H.R. Giger inspired Borg-like creature known as "The Supreme Leader." She clearly hates the crew, as she orders them to be turned into trash cans and Captain EO to be tortured for 100 years. He agrees, but first kicks some game to her, telling her that he has the gift to unlock the beauty within her. When she asks to see this gift he gives her the best response ever: "Not only see, your Highness, but hear!" This is when it gets really good.

"We're basically the same thing, except I came first." - Supreme Leader

His robot general transforms into the most fantastic 80's electric drum set you've ever seen, and Max Rebo's piano shows up for some reason. The entire sequence is like Pee-Wee's Playhouse meets the Transformers. The Supreme Leader is initially digging these sweet jams (who wouldn't be) until Hooter screws it all up. He quickly fixes it, but not before she sends in the guards. What is Captain EO to do?!

Dance his way out, of course! The rest of the video really needs to be seen and not recapped, since no mere mortal words can possibly do it justice. I will say that it involves some elaborate dance choreography, homo-erotic undertones, a killer beat, whips, plot twists, glowing rainbow shirts, moonwalking, and wall Frankensteins that turn into Tron dancers.

Will two different songs and dances be enough to change her world? I don't know, but I sure hope so! Make sure to watch for the surprise WTF-is-she-doing-here cameo at the end.

Honestly, this video is amazing. I turned to Stacey half way through the show at Disney and said, "this is the greatest thing I've ever seen" and meant it. Her response was simply, "this is awful." I don't know how anyone can watch this and not fall in love with it. It's too amazing. Too precious. This was a real thing, that happened in a real world. It was not done ironically or comedically.

The 1980's truly were magical.

(True story - I immediately purchased both these songs on iTunes when I got home. I have no regrets.)

The must-watch video, directed by Francis Ford Coppola and produced by George Lucas: Captain EO
Samantha and I are both huge "Firefly" fans, so when she asked me if I wanted to do a shiny new "Firefly"-themed shoot with her I couldn't say yes fast enough. I'm no Ben Tian Sheng De Yi Dui Rou! Sam was given a free T-Shirt from Geekchic Tees for her "awesome geek work" and she wanted to do a shoot as a thank you to them. Luckily, I had my very own browncoat and gun. If anyone can give Nathan Fillion, Captain Tightpants himself, a run for his money it's Sam. She somehow made Malcolm Reynolds even sexier, which was previously thought to be impossible. But you know what they say: No power in the 'Verse could stop us from trying. It was really awesome to be able to do something "Firefly" related, and we hope you enjoy our little shindig.

Ally never ceases to amaze me, and this was no exception.
I was there for the painting, and I still have to tell myself that Abby isn't actually wearing clothes. The detail in the top gets me every time.
Initially, we had two models today and were going to do a Star Wars themed shoot. One of the models couldn't make it last minute, so we scrambled to come up with an idea.

This one came together because we wanted to try out the glow-in-the-dark body paint that reacted to black light.

I had contacted Leeshe about modeling for the calendar because I really liked her look, and I thought she would be perfect for this role.

Not only does she look like Miranda, but she rocks that suit.
As always, you can see more on my facebook page. And don't forget to show Ally some love, too. She's been nailing it with these paint jobs!
This was the one I was most looking forward to. Ally's concept art for this was killer, and I could not wait to see it in actuality.

Ally and I were both so eager to see this one come to pass that we moved up the shoot an entire month, since neither of us could bear to wait any longer.

Obviously, a few of these involve no body paint. But Kayla and I figured we may as well have some fun with it. So here's our "abridged" version of the Terminator story.
Enjoy!

She was a major character in the 1986 animated movie. Any child who grew up in the 80's vividly recalls that movie since they KILLED OPTIMUS PRIME, thus scarring an entire generation of children.

I was excited to see how this one would turn out, and once again Ally did not disappoint.

I watched Thundercats all the time, and Cheetara left an impression on me. And before you all laugh at me, I know I'm not alone. Cracked just wrote an article about "6 Pop Culture Icons Nobody Admits They Were Attracted To" and guess who made the list?
Of course, that meant I had to add her to the calendar.
I was nervous about adding Captain Planet to the project. I figured it would either be really awesome, or incredibly ridiculous. Luckily, it's pretty awesome.
I've never been very good at video games - I was always more of a "button masher" than anything else. So it should be no surprise that I often favored Chun Li as a character. She was fast (so I could avoid getting hit) and she had a killer lighting kick.

It was my only real chance at winning a match. Try to jump out of the way, and kick quickly and frequently.

When we were coming up with concepts for the calendar, I wanted to represent things that sum up who I am. I knew I wanted Chun Li in there somewhere.

So here's a teaser shot of Emily as Chun Li. Keep reading to see more.

Along with Allyson Averell, I will be putting together a body paint calendar for 2013.

Each month will have a different geeky concept, all brought to life by the talented painting of Ally.

Stay tuned, as more photos will be added as the weeks and months continue. And if you have not already, please "like" Photography by Joey D to stay up to date on all information relevant to the calendar and it's progress.Chewbloggahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00311780397944883064noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9221855081248731957.post-86766100895007173242011-11-28T22:19:00.000-05:002011-11-28T22:19:12.441-05:00Ideas for the 2013 CalendarAssuming this first calendar is a success (and that's where you come in), I would like to make this an annual thing. I had a lot of fun doing this calendar, so I thought I would make this a tradition.

If I make my money back on this one, I will make another calendar for next year. Obviously, I don't want to make the same calendar over again, so I need a new theme. Here's where you can help.

If I were to make a 2013 Calendar, what would you want to see? I'm open to suggestions, so please leave a comment and let me know what you want to see. Who knows - maybe your idea will make it into production.

I can't explain how awesome that was to see. And my site! It jumped 33,000 views already, and it's only been on there for a few hours!

I am going to be having a gallery opening tonight (11/12/11) at Grooveground in Collingswood. My work will be featured as part of their Second Saturday event, and I will be there in person from 6-10 to meet and greet, answer questions, and sign art.

So come on out, get a cup of coffee, and buy some art! If you head out tonight, I will be there in person to sign any purchases you may make.

If you can't make it out tonight, no worries. My work will be featured until 12/12. I have a good selection of photos for sale, and Christmas is just right around the corner....

Hope to see you all there!

I've been super busy with wedding photos, engagement shots, family portraits, and life in general that I've been lacking on the blog. I wanted to give everyone an update on where I stood with the calendar, since there seems to be a good deal of interest in it. (That's a good thing!)

As of now, the calendar is coming together awesomely. My brother Andy is busy laying out the calendar and working on all the designs. He's got plenty of notes to go from, but only a few days to get it done. Hopefully it will be off to the presses by November 11.

I am aiming for a release date of November 25, 2011 - Black Friday. It seems like a good date to release an epic calendar. Maybe I'll even run a sale or something....

On the same date, I will be offering prints of additional shots from the photo shoots for sale. (That was an awkward sentence...) I took hundreds of shots at each session, and got some really awesome photos in return. Sadly, only one from each can be featured in the calendar. Seems like a waste. So I will be offering "outtake" photos at very reasonable prices on my website as well.

Be sure to keep checking back here to stay update. Or, to make it easier, like my fanpage on facebook to stay current with what's going on.

Christmas will be here before you know it, and there's no telling when Lucas will get around to issuing me a Cease and Desist, so get them while they're hot. Save your money now - that way you have no excuse. You won't want to miss this.

Price is subject to change, but I am aiming for a retail price of $25. I think that's a very fair price to pay for 14 sexy ladies in Star Wars attire.

So start saving, keep checking, and spread the word. As a thank you, I leave you with these. Enjoy! (images after the jump)

I'm still getting this site up and running. I just synched my blog to it, and I am in the process of re-doing the whole thing.

I gave out a lot of cards this weekend at the New York Comic Con (so many that I ran out and had to improvise). If you've come to this site to look for them - be patient. I will get them up in the next day or two. For now, head over to my facebook page and you can view some of them there. And please, feel free to tag yourself or anyone you may recognize. And don't forget to "like" the page, too! I update that far more often than I do this.

So check out my fan page to get started.

All the best,
